Interview with Magdalena Egger (AUT), winner of two gold medals in Alpine Skiing at EYOF 2019.
Hello Magdalena. Winning two gold medals really is a very impressive achievement. What was your reaction?
I feel really amazed and I'm super happy about it, because since I didn't think I would win two medals. Now, there are two gold medals and it is so unbelievable.
What do you think about the other athletes? How was the competition?
I think it's so cool to see lots of different sports, because normally I'm just watching Alpine Ski Racing, with the exception of the Olympics and World Championships of course. Most often, we just see Alpine Skiing, so it's nice to see other sports as well.
What are your impressions of the host cities, Sarajevo and East Sarajevo? Did anything make an impression on you?
I like that it is a city, but you have mountains too. I really like the combination of that. It's a huge city for me, because I grew up in a small village so I'm not used to being in such a big city.
Are you taking part in the Parallel Slalom competition tomorrow? What are your expectations?
Yes, I will take part. I just want to have fun with the team and we will see what the result is.
Maybe a third medal?
Who knows. Anything can happen.
What would you like to achieve in five years?
In five years? That's a good question. Right now, I just want to focus on my skiing and to try to improve myself constantly. I want to get new experiences, in the European Cup or something like that, something at a higher level. In five years, maybe it's possible that I could take part in the World Cup.
What about the Olympic Games?
The Olympic Games? I think that's too far away for me now, I try to focus on smaller steps.
So you'd like to gain experience at these smaller competitions, and when you feel ready, then take part in the Olympics?
Actually, I think EYOF isn't that small. It's, of course, a highlight for me this year. So, I really appreciate it.
What do you think the youth of Bosnia and Herzegovina need to succeed in Alpine Skiing? What do you think is missing?
That's a good one. I don't know how the ski club is funded and supported here. I mean, I think the infrastructure is good because you have several slopes and you have the opportunities. Maybe there just simply isn't enough support. I'm not sure, but maybe that's the point.
Do you have any idols?
Yes, I do. Of course, the real fascinating athletes like Marcel Hirscher - of Austria, of course. Or Anna Fenninger and Mikaela Shiffrin. I try to pick the best quality of each athlete to build one athlete. This way, I can have a look at them and just copy them. But, I don't want to copy one person.
What are your hobbies?
I really enjoy being at home with my family and spending time with my friends. I don't have much time for it, which is why I enjoy it so much.
Would you like to return to Bosnia and Herzegovina?
Yes, it would be interesting to see it in the summer. Now, I know what it's like in winter, and I would like to come here in the summer as well.
Is there anything you'd like to tell us, so we can get to know you better?
As for my results, I just won three gold medals at the Austrian Championships in my age group. That was very cool, because it shows you that you’re not only good at one discipline, that you have more skills. That was really cool.
You're very welcome here in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we will be happy to host you again. Thank you very much and congratulations!
