HOST CITIES

SFR Yugoslavia is a first socialist country to host the Winter Olympic Games. The natural resources of the surrounding mountains - Jahorina, Bjelašnica, Igman and Trebević, as well as the hospitality and sports spirit of Sarajevans helped the city break a record by presenting the largest Winter Olympic Games of its time. This triumphal event (1984) featured 49 nations and over a thousand participants. Sarajevo was awarded the gold medal for the organization due to the hospitality of people.

SARAJEVO

Sarajevo, the capital of mountain-rugged Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a charming city re ecting perfect symbiosis of the past and the modern, a bridge between the East and the West. The city itself was established in the 15th century, but dates back to the Neolithic period and it has ever since symbolized the melting pot of various cultures and religions. Indeed, along only a street you will come across a mosque, a synagogue, an orthodox and a catholic church. But the blend continues to more than sacral monuments and the city arrests Ottoman, Austro - Hungarian, Socialist and other architectural styles.

Sarajevo did become a symbol of the coexistence of communities from different cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Very few cities in the world can offer such a variety of interesting things in such a small area as does Sarajevo. Historical attractions, natural beauty and unique experience of a meeting place for East and West are all reasons that have brought and continue to bring so many visits to Sarajevo. Winter offers plenty of opportunities for winter sports and recreation in the snow. Spring and autumn, with mild climate, offer pleasant exploration of natural beauty in the surroundings and a vibrant programme of cultural events in the city.

Summer is a time when the city, its squares and streets become an on-the-go holiday; it is the time when the city lives twenty-four seven.Sarajevo has its own specific gravity, so a single visit very often becomes the start of a more permanent attachment to this city and its people. Therefore, the best thing to do is to visit so you too could say you fell in love with Sarajevo. The tap water in Sarajevo is safe to drink as it pours down as cool as the source and tastes really great so don’t get surprised when you see people drinking the water from Sebilj (the old traditional fountain on Baščaršija). You should follow the example.

For over four hundred years, mosques, synagogues, Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches have been built and have stood side by side amidst Sarajevo giving the city its unique feel and adding to the Sarajevo image of being the “European Jerusalem”.

While in Sarajevo, you will notice a lot of aščinicas, buregdžiničas, and ćevabdžinicas (which are) connected to another long tradition; they are a sort of fast food restaurants of Bosnia and Herzegovina serving excellent traditional meals.

It consists of the following municipalities: Pale, Sokolac, East Ilidža, East Old Town, East New Sarajevo and Trnovo, while the administrative seat is in Pale. Forests, meadows and lush vegetation full of birds and wildlife, while clear streams and rivers swarm with trout and crayfish - these are true challenges for the hunting and fishing enthusiasts. Kadino vrelo, in the upper reach of the Prača River, is a right place for a nice picnic in nature, with plenty of local cuisine specialities and forest fruit. Rocks and steep cliffs of Mt. Jahorina, Mt. Romanija and Mt. Trebević are a paradise for hikers, climbers, paraglider pilots and other adventurers.
